Buying and Drinking Beer in Little Rock Arkansas
If you’d
like to drink beer while you are here in Little Rock, you are in luck. We have
many good beer places. The best area for beer, overall, is the River Market
District, just on the other side of the interstate from the Clinton
Presidential Library. There are several others listed below. Note that these are NOT paid endorsements,
but rather our favorite places to drink beer.
In the River Market
area we recommend -
Boscos - A good quality brewpub with a menu that is more
upscale than you will find in most similar establishments. The Flaming
Stone is mentioned in Michael Jackson's (the light skinned guy with the
afro, not the pop singer) Great Beer Guide. This is a very well managed,
clean and inviting place.
The Flying Saucer - If you like a great selection of beers, you will
be like a kid in a candy store here. There is a wall lined with taps, and
visible coolers filled with a variety of beers from all over the world.
This is by far the best beer place in Little Rock. Smoking in the first
area, but the main bar is smoke free. No children allowed.
Also in the Downtown Little Rock
area:
Vino's - A wonderful dive. A brewpub with a punk attitude.
The beers are top notch. The pizza and calzones are good too. Note that
though it is a dive, all classes and types eat and drink here. You'll see
freaks and suits drinking in harmony. Gold Medal winner, GABF 08.
In North
Little Rock:
Cregeen's Irish Pub – Located in the heart of the Argenta District in
downtown NLR, they have a great selection of beers both on tap and in
bottles. This is an authentic Irish pub right down to the 'snug'. The food
is good and the environment is inviting. It is located at Broadway and
Main, about halfway between Verizon Arena and Dickey Stephens Park
(baseball). Smoking outside only.
The
best place in NLR to buy beer is Springhill Wine and Spirits
– 4281 E. McCain,
across the interstate from McCain Mall, next to Home Depot. They have a
great beer selection, both cold and room-temp, and at least two folks on
staff that know how to talk about it. Eric is the manager and he knows
beer. This is the Official Beer Store of EBeerSnob.Com, and is the best
beer store in Central Arkansas.
In West
Little Rock
YaYa's - 17711 Chenal
Parkway
(Promedade) is this nice modern restaurant bar. The bar area is small, but
the beer selection is above average. They don’t know squat about beer, so
if you order a porter, tell them not to serve it in a chilled glass.
The Pantry
is located at 11401 Rodney Parham, just
east of Rodney Parham/Hinson/Green Mountain. They have a small but
excellent selection of beer, and know it well. Shane, the bartender, and
Tomas (pronounced Tomazhe) the proprietor, are beer lovers. The best
selection in WLR is
Khalil’s Pub, just south of
Shackleford and Markham, next to La Quinta. This is a smoking bar, so no
kids allowed. The restaurant side is non-smoking, but make your way to the
other end if you don’t smoke, because there’s lots of traffic around the
door between the two. Both Chris and Khalil know a lot about beer. The food
is very good, particularly the appetizers.
The
best place in WLR to buy beer is Colonial Wine and Spirits
– 11200 W. Markham,
just west of Markham and Shackleford. Make no mistake, this is a wine store
that carries beer. They don’t know beer, they just sell it. On the other
hand, the selection is quite good. Almost everything that is available in
the market can be found here. They have the largest beer cooler in Central
Arkansas, ask for David Waddle, he is the only one on staff that knows
beer. On the other hand,
Sullivants Liquor at 8120 W. Cantrell has a very good selection of
beer, and really care about beer. Several of the staff are home brewers.
Much of the craft beer out front is available cold, but the cooler space is
limited. Request if you want it and they’ll fetch it for you. Ask for
Daniel Bennett.
Our local brewer
is Diamond Bear,
and they do a very good job. They compete, and win, at international beer
festivals. The Pale Ale (not to be confused with the IPA) is the winner of
several gold medals. Diamond beers are served in several restaurants and
bars around town. The brewery is in the downtown area at 323 Cross. You can
either buy your beer there or in any local grocery store or liquor store.
The tours are fun and interesting.
One final note to
our out of town visitors. Sit deep, come often, stay as long as you like,
eat lots of food, drink lots of beer, and please go home broke, our economy
needs the money.
